Homemade Refried Beans

Plate of home made refried beans

These homemade refried beans are simple to make and taste amazing!

After tasting this recipe, you will wonder why you ever resorted to canned store bought refried beans. Not to mention they are preservative-free, additive free, GMO-free, gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan-friendly!

You can even make a double batch of these tasty refried beans and divvy it up into half cup portions, place them in a small freezer bag, and freeze them for whenever you need them. This recipe makes approximately 4 cups.

Refried beans are a great item to add to your list of freezer meals! The recipe is as follows. Feel free to substitute for whatever beans you may like, and you can use fresh raw onions (1/2 cup diced) and raw garlic (1 minced clove) and saute them first with oil until transparent.

Ingredients

2 cups vegetable broth

5 cups black beans (or beans of your choice)

1/2 tsp garlic powder (omit if using fresh raw garlic)

1/2 tsp onion powder (omit if using fresh raw onion)

1/2 tsp chili powder

1 tsp cumin

2 tbsp olive oil

*You may add sea salt for additional taste. It was not necessary here as the vegetable broth used was salted enough.

Directions

Add all the ingredients to a saucepan and bring to a boil then turn the temperature down to simmer for 30 minutes while stirring occasionally.

Remove from heat and let cool for a few minutes. At this time, you can use a hand blender to puree, or place in a food processor or blender until you reach your desired consistency.

Don’t worry if it looks too watery at first, just keep blending until all the beans are broken up.

Now they are ready to eat and enjoy or freeze them away for later! Refried beans could be used in tacos, nacho dips, and many other fast and fun appetizers or meals. Enjoy!
